lstcause [1:01]: nothing. I have never done this before. I am saving for a house and somehow got the idea that i should try to trade stock. I might just be good at it.
moby [1:04]: I'd watch the video, use the papetrader, read the book, you'll make more informed decisions then
moby [1:08]: past midnight for me, happy viewing, welcome to SV, see ya
nester [7:28]: Oil prices were stuck near $79 a barrel on Tuesday as investors weighed a three-day stock market rally against signs of sluggish U.S. crude demand.
By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for September delivery was up 9 cents at $79.07 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract was unchanged to settle at $78.98 on Monday.
Surging U.S. stock markets have underpinned oil prices as traders often look to equities as a barometer of overall investor sentiment. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1 percent Monday and is up about 4 percent in the last three trading sessions. European stocks were also higher Tuesday.
nester [7:28]: NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks are set to continue their run higher Tuesday as economic and earnings reports worldwide are boosting optimism about the health of the global economy.
Chemical maker DuPont Co. became the latest company to easily top second-quarter profit and revenue forecasts, adding to a string of earnings reports in recent days that have shown the economy might not be slowing as much as investors had anticipated.
DuPont also raised its profit outlook for the year. Such outlooks have been a boon to the market because they indicate companies are gaining confidence in a global economic recovery.
nester [7:29]: LONDON (AP) -- European stock markets mostly rose Tuesday as investors warmed to another batch of better than expected earnings and economic data from Germany, while the euro pushed briefly above the $1.30 mark once again.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 40.25 points, or 0.8 percent, at 5,391.37 while Germany's DAX rose 19.27 points, or 0.3 percent, to 6,213.48. The CAC-40 in France was 34.20 points, or 0.9 percent, higher at 3,670.38.
Wall Street was poised for gains at the open after solid gains on Monday in the wake of upbeat U.S. housing data and outlook statement from shipping company FedEx -- Dow futures were up 39 points, or 0.4 percent, at 10,496, while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 futures rose 4.80 points, or 0.4 percent, at 1,111.30.
nester [7:30]: NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- State budget gaps are now expected to total $83.9 billion for fiscal 2011, with shortfalls anticipated for the next couple of years, according to a study released Tuesday by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
That bleak assessment contains one ray of good news: The total is slightly less than the estimate in March for an $89 billion gap.
The biggest shortfall to make up may be the reduction in federal aid for medical programs. Congress hasn't approved extending this aid after increasing support as part of last year's stimulus package.
nester [7:30]: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nations must not pull back too quickly on economic stimulus because the global recovery still needs support, a top U.S. Treasury Department official said on Monday.
"The pace of exit strategy has to be carefully calibrated. We have to be careful not to have an overly accelerated withdrawal," Treasury Under Secretary Lael Brainard told the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a Washington think tank.
Weighing in on a topic that has exposed differences between the United States and Europe, Brainard said that differences in the speed at which countries shifted from stimulus to restraint shouldn't overshadow the broad consensus that existed on fiscal policy.
Spending to combat the 2007-2009 financial crisis and prop up teetering economies has left large piles of government debt around the world.
nester [7:31]: SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Among the companies whose shares are expected to see active trade in Tuesday's session are BP PLC, Lockheed Martin Corp. and Aflac Inc.

madriver [8:37]: what do you think andrew?
madriver [8:38]: hi nester
nester [8:38]: morning mad
madriver [8:38]: think this rally has legs?
nester [8:39]: lol... no i don't; however, i will play what they give me...
madriver [8:42]: I think it's self fulfilling in a way.....market goes up people are "happy" then goes higher ....overextends...down....I think we have a month or 2 of decent run to May levels IMO
nester [8:43]: yep. think they extend this. have 98 days before mid term elections.
madriver [8:44]: good point forgot about elections.....
nester [8:44]: plenty of time for you to practice and learn how to play shorts.
madriver [8:45]: lol
madriver [8:45]: I've been eyeing up the overbought list
nester [8:45]: Gar has a webinar regarding Bear markets.
nester [8:45]: great thing to learn before it happens
madriver [8:45]: yes that's thursday I believe?
nester [8:46]: yes, this Thursday
madriver [8:46]: i work f/t so i'm moving towards swing trading. I can't watch the tape all day
nester [8:47]: the chart still says we are in a Bear trend; although it is becoming more broke each run up
madriver [8:47]: what chart are you looking at?
nester [8:48]: so do i. work a lot and try to grab bits and pieces in between
karenbcz [8:48]: MAD; look at FAZ pre-market. It's going to $12.
nester [8:48]: still watching a few short positions. have SOMX and VVUS on radar just in case.
karenbcz [8:49]: Everytime I think I've got the "hang" of this, I get $%**$.
madriver [8:49]: doesn't look so good right now if long.
Andrew [8:52]: Good morning.
madriver [8:52]: nester ...pretty hard to practice shorts when market isn't going down
madriver [8:52]: morning Andrw
madriver [8:52]: Andrew
madriver [8:53]: odds against the practice
madriver [8:53]: ?
Andrew [8:53]: I think it's the perfect environment to practice shorting.
Andrew [8:54]: Because it's very difficult right now.
nester [8:54]: mad - it is hard. i don't short if the market is above +100
moby [8:54]: Welcome trials

Andrew [8:55]: If you can short profitably or break even in conditions like we've had the last few days, you are in great shape. Down days will be a piece of cake then.
madriver [8:55]: andrew...explain
Andrew [8:56]: For some of yesterday, even though it was a strong green day ultimately, Overbought was the best-performing screen.
nester [8:56]: Andrew is correct. if you can master it in this environment, the you will be golden. also, you should be able to do the opposite, go long when we are falling.
DJalecC [12:57]: BP Plc (BP: 38.65 0.00 0.00%) posted a second-quarter 2010 loss of $5.48 per American Depositary Share (ADS), well below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.44 and the year-earlier profit of $1.40. The loss was mainly due to a pre-tax charge of $32.2 billion related to the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) oil spill that the company had to register in the quarter.
However, the company’s revenue jumped approximately 34% to $75,871 million from $56,561 million in the year-ago quarter and surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $72,600 million.
The company also confirmed that CEO Tony Hayward will be replaced by Bob Dudley on October 1, 2010.
madriver [8:57]: I see what you mean however I don't really have the time unfortunately
Andrew [8:57]: There were also some nice bounce setups - stuff that got hammered at one point in the day and then had a nice move into the close.
Andrew [8:58]: So it's a good environment to practice navigating bear market rallies, as well.
madriver [8:58]: I can tell you one thing the list of oversold has been shredded....if you played the oversold into this rally........golden
Andrew [8:59]: I think I'm going to watch ATPG early this morning for some possible profit-taking. It had a huge move into the close yesterday and is gapping up again today.
madriver [8:59]: I play the oversold and overbought alot.....it seems to work for me...have to be patient for entry though
nester [9:00]: BP rose yesterday on rumor of new CEO. may fall a bit today
Andrew [9:00]: S is very close to its 52-week high as well, so there might be some profit-taking in that near 5.20 or so.
madriver [9:00]: s has had a nice run
Andrew [9:01]: AIG is also beginning to look more interesting again
Andrew [9:02]: 40.00 has been a very tough level for AIG for a while
Andrew [9:02]: BIDU looks due for some profit-taking as well
madriver [9:03]: INFN....possible short
Andrew [9:04]: Yeah looks good - lots of selling into the close yesterday.
madriver [9:04]: what do you think of INFN
jolox [9:04]: All markets are in the "bear mode" now......they are in the process of making lower highs and lows. If these " up rallies " can take out last lower high.....it is considered in " up trend ". These rallies are considered " normal " in forming lower highs/lows and ' sideways ' markets.
madriver [9:05]: hi jolox
Andrew [9:05]: Well recently they have been making some higher highs and higher lows though so there's a decent chance we've seen the bottom. You never know.
Andrew [9:05]: Be prepared for either scenario.
madriver [9:06]: yeap
madriver [9:06]: when do you start school andrew?
Andrew [9:07]: It's also possible this could be a giant bull trap and we'll complete an inverse head & shoulders pattern to trick people and then it will fail.
LEECO [9:07]: My error was on Welcome room-morning madriver,Andrew, nester, moby, istcause,JB,karenbcz,
Andrew [9:07]: end of August
madriver [9:07]: hi leeco...missed you yesterday
nester [9:08]: morning Leeco
madriver [9:08]: the scenerios are endless
madriver [9:09]: I would think we'll see some profit taking this week sometime......
LEECO [9:09]: What is the concensus on buying FAS Aug $23 calls right adter the open?
Andrew [9:10]: Oh wow, XLF is gapping up near 15.00. The financials really could be meeting some resistance soon. 15.00 is a huge level for them.
Andrew [9:11]: I'll definitely be going back to FAZ a lot today despite the lower market volatility.
madriver [9:13]: leeco....don't know enough about options to provide opinion
Firedup [9:13]: watching VLTR, PLT for morning gap down.
jolox [9:13]: Many stocks in S&P and Russell Indexes have been trending up in last few weeks...see CRUS....they are very " overbought " ...this market will go down very soon to correct. A way to play stocks or options during these rallies is to play pullbacks...set up 10 ma with 20 or 30 ma and play pullbacks under 10ma to 20/30 ma.......similar to Raymoney and Floortrader systems...see pullbacks on CRUS.
Andrew [9:13]: Gap downs might be a little trickier today since the market overall is gapping up so those stocks would be showing a lot of relative weakness.
Firedup [9:16]: roger that, futures may be too high
Andrew [9:19]: Consumer confidence data comes out at 10:00am so that might be the x-factor today
rw [9:21]: leeco-----bbuying fas aug calls is like spinning the roulet wheel.....Look at the chart daily then 60 minute and see how it looks many thing fas will be down in coming weeks
madriver [9:21]: if this goes up into wednesday I think they'll use jobs as an excuse to selloff if the numbers aren't decent
Andrew [9:23]: We might start seeing some tricky stuff too like selling even when there's good news.
Andrew [9:23]: Or rallying when there's bad news.
jolox [9:24]: There are not too many stocks lately.....with 10ma above 20/30 ma that have pulled back....PPDI is one of few.....watch it today as it comes from pullback to try and make new high.......I keep lists of all trending stocks so I can play/watch them as mkt pulls back.
madriver [9:24]: i thought that too andrew....possibilities are endless so it seems fruitless to speculate
rw [9:25]: NESTER: what guide do you use for the 100 plus rating that you do not short....
rw [9:25]: morning madriver, jolox and Andrew -

PA [12:40]: Andrew, do I have to pay for short If I borrow intraday
Andrew [12:40]: There was some profit taking this morning that accelerated once the bad consumer confidence data come out. The market though had a really nice 1-hour bounce the last hour.

Andrew [12:41]: out TEVA tiny loss
PA [12:42]: Thanks
Andrew [12:42]: out INFN tiny loss
ortrade [12:51]: PA I checked on that question with IB. You DO HAVE TO PAY. Only if you borrow intraday the interest is very low and rather negligible compared to the spread costs.
PA [12:56]: Automatic wave count on my Advanced GET suggests that long term we are on corrective wave 4 of primary down wave which should end around 10601, there is heavy resistance between 10535 and 10576. If Dow go higher than 10601 we may have to recount the wave.
Andrew [12:56]: Oh, it must depend on the individual broker then.
Andrew [12:57]: out RDN +1%
ortrade [12:59]: I daught brokers will give away that portion of possible gains. But it is possible they will not mention these additional expense to traders.
PA [12:59]: Thank you ortrade, I read on IB somewhere that you have to pay something like 0.42 $ a share a day which is very steep and they suggest me to short stock future instead. I may have to check the number again should not be that high.
Andrew [13:00]: Some brokers mention they do not charge margin interest intraday.
PA [13:01]: stock future has wide spread even active stock like FAZ.
Andrew [13:01]: There seems to be a lot more volume in the market today compared to yesterday.
PA [13:02]: I never have problem with short with Etrade and Ameritrade seems like they never charge me.
Andrew [13:03]: IB is probably one of the few brokers who do.
Andrew [13:03]: out 1/4th FAZ +1%
Andrew [13:04]: out 1/5th USG +1%
ortrade [13:06]: PA I remember calling 2 years ago and making calculation with their tech. After looking at fees spread and short interests I found anyway intraday short is negligible. The place where the broker can hit the trader the most is the spread. In particular when position is not working out, the spread difference is ocassionally very large. The spread times the number of shares can add up big in particular in moving stocks. The trouble is the spread is instantaneous (changes for second to second) and it is very hard to argue on that.
PA [13:10]: I notice one thing with IB that I always get filled in round number like 46.41 never 46.4106 etc. like others.
Andrew [13:10]: Are you doing self-routing to an ecn PA?
ortrade [13:11]: I still like them due to the smart routing IB feature and them being a direct acces platform. Recently I am having a strnage problem with my computer. When market is moving big my internet connection gets messed up and gets restored after a minute or two.. the strangest thing.
ortrade [13:11]: meant strange problem
Andrew [13:12]: If so, that is why. The 46.4106 fills typically come from market makers providing tiny price improvement in order to be able to take the other side of your trade instead of sending it out to the open market.
Andrew [13:12]: On the regular ECNs all quotes are only in 0.01 increments.
PA [13:13]: So IB is better is that what you mean Andrew.
Andrew [13:14]: You can also get sub-penny fills if your order is routed to a dark liquidity pool
Andrew [13:14]: I think in general direct access trading is advantageous but it can get more expensive if you trade lower-priced stocks.
Andrew [13:16]: One strategy to really reduce the impact of commissions on your bottom line is to use a direct access broker like IB that charges 0.005/share and then just trade stocks above $40 or so.
Andrew [13:17]: added to NLST short 3.12 (double position)
PA [13:18]: Thanks Andrew I have to learn more for day trading. I have to go now have many good trades every one Bye.
Andrew [13:20]: out rest of USG +1.4%
jolox [13:21]: Direct access trading is really growing and most big trading companies know it. If you know have a non-direct access broker......try and negotiate a new trading fee...I did and lowered mine by 30%.
Andrew [13:21]: Which broker do you use jolox?
jolox [13:22]: TDA
Andrew [13:22]: Do you think the market might see some more selling this afternoon? Or are there too many buyers waiting to buy all the pullbacks today?
ortrade [13:24]: I heard non direct trading access since they do not have smart routing you get higher spreads, entry and exit fills on your orders. IB has the smart routing feature that finds the best fills among all ecns.
Andrew [13:25]: With the smart routing do they still pass through the regular ecn fees/rebates, or do you use smart routing with the bundled commission plan?
jolox [13:28]: For rebates from brokers...you have to agree to a set number of trades.
Andrew [13:29]: Most good brokers will give you the standard ecn rebates regardless of how much you trade.
Andrew [13:29]: out another 1/4th FAZ +1.5%
ortrade [13:30]: You may need to ask them that question directily. IB SmartRouting represents each leg of a spread order independently and enters each leg at the best possible venue. Through smart routing IB undertakes the risk of partially executed spread orders by placing them into their error account.

Andrew [14:16]: The What Works looks just since 9:50am whereas the Bull/Bear looks across multiple days.
jolox [14:16]: When Hank was here....he dispensed alot of valuable wisdom and information. One thing I remember him saying is " Stocks move in predictable cycles ".....that is a stock goes from a high to a low.....and low to high in a predictible manner. I know from looking at the SPX, that each leg of it's highs and lows is from 8 to 14 days. Next time you look at a stock to buy....look at a 3 to 6 month chart of it and see if you can identify any like cycles or candle action.
madriver [14:17]: where is hank anyway...I thought he was coming back
rw [14:18]: I doubt it madriver. He was saying blood pressure was getting high - kinda thought it was realted to being here---maybe trading to much
Andrew [14:18]: So we have some mixed signals of a very short-term downtrend (today so far) within the context of a strong short-term uptrend (last couple of weeks), within a medium-term downtrend (since late April), within a long-term uptrend (since March 2009), within a longer-term downtrend (since top in 2007).
rw [14:18]: i have e mailed him...
jolox [14:19]: He wants free tea and biscuits and a per diem for showing up.

Hoecake [14:31]: I think I am going to get some XLF 15.00 puts
Hoecake [14:33]: Actually maybe not since its above its 50 day ma
rw [14:34]: bright makes money to trade available andrew.
Andrew [14:36]: Oh so you don't need to pay any money at all up-front?
Andrew [14:38]: They're a very established and respectable firm but I've read that their commissions are on the high side compared to other firms out there. Maybe that's still worth it though if they provide other advantages.
rw [14:39]: you may pay some but they give you trading money i read up to half million dollars they trade a lot of pairs pre market balance trades etc....they have boot camp for two weeks etc.............seminars ---etc always looking for traders
rw [14:40]: probably a good place to show Stockvision - they sure could use it....I would think...
Andrew [14:40]: They did lower rates recently but I think most new traders still start out at 0.007/share which isn't that bad but not as good as IB or other retail brokers.

rw [15:52]: andrew --it has been going up daily since june 25 I told my inv mgr to buy it but He did not wooulda made 5dollars a share by now.....4% dividend....it is a no brainer ----sell leaf tobacco to the majors - snuff, cigar cigarettes ---all also foreign companjies like bti...but you are probably right about a pull back....
Andrew [15:52]: I'm just basing it on the chart rw.
rw [15:52]: I should take the five dollars out of his fee this quarter.
Andrew [15:52]: Not in terms of investing.
carr [15:53]: RW UVV looks like it has some more upside potential, but if it drops below $44.34 it could be headed down.
rw [15:53]: appreciate it andrew ---not good to mix fundamentals and charts lOL
ortrade [15:53]: today was interesting for trading. SPX traded orderly and neither bulls or bears were likely to loose.. It was one of those very rare days when equilbrium prevailed..
rw [15:53]: Yes carr - thanks
Andrew [15:54]: out half AONE +1.4%
rw [15:54]: cigx is working on some "safer" tobacco process it could do something one day....also on alzheimers rx to help patients remember better
rw [15:55]: Inv mgr has been accumulating MO should continue up........they now also own the snuff business and half of the cigar business -plus marlboro
rw [15:56]: but MO has to pass 22.25 area before it goes up more
Andrew [15:58]: out rest of AONE +0.48%, out USG +0.67%
LEECO [15:58]: A nice down day tomorrow would let me cash out my FAZ with a profit
