nester [7:28]: LONDON (AP) -- BP says it has received a demand from U.S. authorities for advance notice of any asset sales or significant cash transfers.
It confirmed a report in the Financial Times on Wednesday that U.S. assistant attorney general Tony West wrote to the company on June 23. Normally the U.S. Justice Department does not require advance notice of such deals.
BP spokeswoman Sheila Williams said the oil company had not responded to the letter but would do so "in due course." She declined to say whether the Justice Department had set a deadline.
The letter underlines the U.S. government's intense scrutiny of BP as it struggles to cap the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico and clean up the damage.
nester [7:29]: LONDON (AP) -- World markets retreated Wednesday after a disappointing survey of the U.S. services sector rekindled worries that the recovery in the world's largest economy will be anemic.
After losses in Asia, major indexes in Europe opened lower. Britain's FTSE of leading shares was down 1.1 percent at 4,912.86. Germany's DAX was 0.8 percent lower at 5,895.74 and France's CAC-40 was off 1.1 percent to 3,386.18.
U.S. futures augured a lower open on Wall Street. Dow futures were down 0.5 percent at 9,633 while the Standard and Poor's 500 futures lost 0.6 percent to 1,018.00.

nester [7:29]: NEW YORK (AP) -- A day after the Dow Jones industrial average broke a seven-day losing streak, stocks are set to resume that slide. Futures dropped Wednesday as investors remain concerned about the pace of a global recovery.
Stock futures pointed toward the Dow immediately erasing Tuesday's 57-point gain, which came on a volatile day of trading. Interest rates dipped again in the Treasury market as bond traders remain extremely cautious about potential growth.
There are no major economic reports due out Wednesday that could help shake the market from its recent doldrums by providing a sign that strong growth is imminent. The Labor Department will release its weekly report on initial jobless claims and retailers will disclose monthly June sales results on Thursday.
Those reports could provide a spark for stocks because high unemployment and slowing consumer spending remain the biggest stumbling blocks to a stronger rebound.

Oil investors will be mulling crude inventory levels announced by the American Petroleum Institute later Wednesday and the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration on Thursday.

The stretch was to think the early 2.0% spike in the S&P 500 was much more than that. Still, the wires were awash with leading headlines that the move was predicated on renewed optimism on the other side of the Fourth of July weekend about the economic and earnings outlook. One needed only to look at the Treasury market, though, to know that those headlines were more convenient than convincing.

ortrade [16:13]: It is a great mistery today when I look at FAZ it went straight down .. plenty of points in time to enter short.. I did not enter short even one time today and lost on it 649$ on paper.. Andrew we must be doing something wrong..
ortrade [16:17]: In fact any FAZ short entry of the 5min Boilinger upper band and following the Bear/Bull green (Gar post at 4.03) as the guide should have yielded 100% succes on FAZ.
Andrew [16:17]: Well I'm sure glad my trades after 11:00am were paper trades, but I think bottom line was that today was when market conditions changed drastically and there are so many shorts in the market the last couple of months some stops were probably triggered throughout the day.
ortrade [16:21]: I also did not lose on real dollar cent. It may be useful to have some bounds on the Bear/Bull indicator to mark if market should be read as sideways or as a trending market. Like 2 boundary lines. Perhaps when cursor is between these lines we should take both short and long positions other wise focus on either shorts or longs.
Andrew [16:23]: I always seem to do my worst soon after I've had some of my best days. I get overly aggresive - need to work on that and start doing fewer trades once the Bear/Bull flips contrary to what it had been for a while.

ortrade [16:24]: When doing really well we grow confident in our assumptions and get stubborn and sometimes put more shares down to counterbalance losses.. This is what wipes out a large portion of the gains..
