nester [7:57]: LONDON (MarketWatch) — U.S. stock futures edged lower on Thursday ahead of data on weekly jobless claims and testimony by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on the state of the economy, as markets also absorbed earnings from Dow Chemical Co. and others.
Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 15 points to 12,638 and those on the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index fell 0.6 point to 1,320.7.
Nasdaq 100 futures fell 2.75 points to 2,484.7 5.
nester [7:58]: SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook unveiled plans for the biggest ever Internet IPO that could raise as much as $10 billion, but made it clear CEO Mark Zuckerberg will exercise almost complete control over the company, leaving investors with little say.
The Harvard dropout, who launched the social networking phenomenon from his dorm room, will control 56.9 percent of the voting shares in a company expected to be valued at up to $100 billion when it goes public. Facebook says it has 845 million active monthly users.
Wednesday's long-awaited filing kicks off a process that will culminate in Silicon Valley's biggest coming-out party since the heyday of the dotcom boom and bust.
In its filing Facebook says it is seeking to raise $5 billion, but that is a figure used to calculate registration fees among others and analysts estimate it could tap investors for $10 billion
nester [8:00]: LONDON (MarketWatch) — European stock markets swung between small gains and losses on Thursday, while the mining sector rallied after Xstrata PLC confirmed it’s in talks with Glencore International PLC about a potential merger.
Shares of Xstrata surged 9.5% and those of Glencore rallied 4.8%. News of the merger talks between the two commodities firms pushed the mining sector north. Vedanta Resources PLC gained 4.4%, Rio Tinto PLC advanced 1.6%, and Randgold Resources Ltd. climbed 2.3%.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 index was flat at 259.61, holding on to a six-month high.
nester [8:01]: CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's benchmark stock index fell plunged within minutes of the start of trade Thursday as deadly soccer riots the night before left 74 dead and rekindled fears of fresh instability akin to the unrest that has battered the country and its economy in the year since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.
The benchmark EGX30 index shot down 4.58 percent to 4,473 points by 10:45 am local time before paring losses. By 12:30 p.m., the index was down 2.5 percent, at 4,570 points.
The declines halted a rally in the market over the past week that had been fueled by newfound optimism after the peaceful passing of the one year anniversary of the Jan. 25 uprising that pushed Mubarak from power. Investors had also found cause to cheer in the convening of the country's first post-Mubarak parliament — a legislature that was seated after Egypt's freest elections in decades.
But the riots by football fans late Wednesday in the Mediterranean city of Port Said reignited simmering criticism of the country's military rulers, with witnesses saying the police stood idly by while the violence broke out after the match. Parliament convened an emergency session — a move also mirrored by the Cabinet.
nester [8:02]: WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. government will release weekly jobless claims and fourth-quarter productivity at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch project jobless claims to decline to 370,000 from an originally reported 377,000 in the prior week. Fourth-quarter productivity, meanwhile, is forecast to increase 0.6%. And unit-labor costs are likely to rise 0.8%, according to the MarketWatch survey
nester [8:04]: WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will likely tell members of Congress on Thursday that the slowly improving economy may need more help from the Fed and that cutting the deficit too fast could backfire.
Bernanke is testifying before the House Budget Committee a week after the Fed signaled that a full recovery could take at least three more years. As a result, the Fed said it doesn't plan to raise its benchmark interest rate from a record low before late 2014 at the earliest.
The Fed chief is appearing two days after the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the deficit will top $1 trillion for a fourth straight year and could stay around that level for years.
Republicans have been critical of the Fed's efforts to support the economy. Many have argued that keeping rates too low for too long could escalate inflation. And they've stressed that cutting government spending and lowering taxes are necessary to boost growth.
nester [8:04]: MADRID—Spain's jobless claims shot up 4% in January from December to 4.59 million, a sign that the euro zone's fourth-largest economy is still shedding jobs at a record rate.
All sectors posted more claims but the rise was sharpest for services at 5.1%. In construction, weighed down by a four-year property slump, the number of residents registered as job seekers rose 2.1%. Compared with the same period a year ago, overall claims rose 8%.
"This is evidence of the country's deep economic crisis, and the fact that labor reforms implemented by the previous government haven't stopped the practice of laying off employees as a way to adjust to lower demand," said Engracia Hidalgo, deputy labor minister.
Spain's new conservative government is drawing up a more ambitious labor reform, but the country's powerful trade unions have already complained about the plan, due out in coming weeks.
Thursday's data showed that only 7.3% of all new contracts signed in January were permanent, evidence further job losses are in store. In a sour economy, employers prefer temporary workers, who are much cheaper and easier to fire
nester [8:07]: LONDON (MarketWatch) — The dollar edged higher Thursday, with the euro slipping into negative territory as investors continue to await final word on talks over write-downs on Greek debt held by private bond holders.
Negotiators representing private creditors said late Wednesday that the talks continued to progress and would be completed in days — a prerequisite for Greece to receive a second international bailout crucial to avoiding default when a large debt repayment comes due in March.
The euro traded at $1.3098, down from $1.3159 in late North American trading on Wednesday, while the British pound changed hands at $1.5820, down from $1.5834.
nester [8:08]: LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during a state visit to China on Thursday that the euro had strengthened Europe and that a recent European Union agreement to move toward greater fiscal discipline was sign of progress. Merkel made the comments in a speech to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Analysts said Merkel's trip to China was partly meant to reassure Beijing about the EU's fiscal health and to get whatever support the Chinese government would provide, according to reports. The German leader was due to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao during the visit. Merkel also urged China to use its influence with Iran to stop that nation's nuclear program, reports said.
nester [8:09]: Oil prices fell below $97 a barrel Thursday amid mixed signs about the strength of crude demand in the U.S., the world's largest economy.
By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for March delivery was down $1.05 to $96.56 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 87 cents to settle at $97.61 on Wednesday.
In London, Brent crude rose 21 cents to $111.77 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.
A jump of U.S. crude inventories last week by 4 million barrels suggested oil consumption is sluggish. However, factories raised output in January by the most in seven months, the Institute for Supply Management said Wednesday while the Commerce Department said construction spending rose 1.5 percent in December, the fifth straight monthly gain.
Analysts noted the divergence between Nymex and Brent, with the American contract falling because of rising inventories and the European contract boosted by uncertainty over sanctions and the diplomatic standoff with Iran, as well as the 10-month uprising against the regime in Syria.
"It is becoming clear that there are no supply shortages at the moment and that the price of Brent is mainly being supported by a risk premium," said a report from analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt

"SD is as tenacious as a honey badger," the firm said in its note, referencing the popular YouTube video that's made its way from the internet to the floor of Congress . " Honey badgers are tough skinned, and SD will need to be as multiple compression from buying into the GOM [Gulf of Mexico ] will be painful," the firm says. SD down 13% to $6.80 premarket. Boston Scientific (BSX): Stock is recording a negative range of 6.00 to a low of 5.70. Sellers have been active at 5.90 and above, a possible top for shorts to watch.
Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF): Stock is off mostly between 43.01 and a pre-bell low of 39.99. A tentative near-term top has formed between 42 and 41.50, a ceiling that could offer shorts downside play back into the lower 41s.

Dynamic Offshore Resources primarily operates in the Gulf of Mexico offshore the coasts of Texas and Louisana in water depths of less than 300 feet. HoneyBadger50 [10:59]: 1. Trade With a Clear Mind
Do not make emotional decisions. Realize that emotions are emotions. What differentiates the successful traders from others is how we recalibrate our reactions to our emotions.
I was watching an interview with a surfer. The interviewer asked him what he does when a big surf comes and he goes underwater. The surfer said it was simple. "If I panic, I only have 3-5 seconds of air to breathe. If I stay calm, I have 45-60 seconds of air."
What does surfing have to do with trading? If you panic and operate from a place of fear, you could lose all of your capital. However, if you take a moment and think about your strategies, you can have much better results.
2. Look at Your Portfolio Objectively
Think about your portfolio as if you are looking at the portfolio of your best friend. How would you advise him/her?
3. Limit Your Input
There are a lot of conflicting points of view. If we want to listen to all of them, it becomes very confusing, and the confused mind does not make a decision.
Instead of listening to everybody, pick the top 3 people that you respect and listen to them. This way, you can remain focused and have much better trading results.
4. Be In Tune With the Markets
Trade the markets as they are and not as you want them to be.
If we are not in tune with the markets and don't listen to them, we are going to be in a losing game.
After all, hope is a lousy hedge.
5. Be In a Supportive Environment
It is important to listen to the people that we respect and are successful.
There are traders whose spouse and/or friends have little or no risk tolerance. As a result, these traders allow the fear of their spouse and/or friends to become the boundaries of their success.
Who are you choosing to surround yourself with?
Remember, not the most talented or skilled person wins the game. The game is won by the ones who can manage their Personal Risk and have a Mental Edge.
